Everything I teach runs on three things:
True — Your code: who you are when it's hard and nobody's grading you.
Trained — Prepared for even terrible eventualities. The skill to do the job in front of you — earned before the moment, not improvised in it.
Tested — Proven. The same leader over time and weather, on the good days and the loud ones.
Leadership that holds up is all three, in that order.
For 30 years I worked as a law enforcement ranger and district manager in Colorado — leading crews through the High Park Fire, the Big Thompson Flood, the Cameron Peak Fire, and the Kruger Rock Fire. Out there, character isn't a poster on the wall. It's who you are when everything is loud and the information is incomplete.
I wrote Stay Wild — Guidance for the Undomesticated Leader about what those years taught me. For the past decade I've been teaching it — to emerging leaders who are good at the work but wary of management, because they don't want to lose their principles to get the title.
I'm a teacher more than a speaker. I keep a selective schedule and take the events where the message can actually land.
